Muharram processions being taken out in tight security

ISLAMABAD: Amid tight security to thwart possible terrorist attacks, mourning processions are being taken out on Sunday (8th Muharram) in different cities to pay tribute to the martyrs of Karbala.

The main procession of 8th Muharram in Islamabad was taken out from Jamia Murtaza. The procession will pass through its traditional route and culminate after Maghrib prayers.

In Lahore, the main procession will be commenced from Mori Gate and, after passing through its traditional route, will end at Imam Bargah Bait-ur-Raza in the Palm Street area.

In Karachi the main procession was to be taken out from Nishtar Park. It will culminate at Hussainia Iranian Imam Bargak, Kharadar after passing through Numaish Chowrangi, M.A Jinnah Road, Empress Market and Light House.In Rawalpindi, the mourning procession will emerge from Bakery Chowk at around 6pm at will culminate at Dhok Rata Road late night.
In Peshawar, a procession will emerge from Imam Bargah Syed Najaf Ali Shah and two others from Sadar area this evening.

The federal government gave finalised security plan for 9th and 10th Muharram as well to provide security to country-wide processions and majalis.Cellular services will remain suspended on these two days in sensitive cities to avert any potential terror threat.

The federal interior ministry has decided to suspend cellular services on 9th and 10th of Muharram, on recommendations from the provincial governments.Pillion riding has been banned for three days in Islamabad, Karachi and other cities from 8th to 10th of Muharram.At least 32,695 troopers from Pak Army, rangers and Frontier Corps (FC) and Frontier Constabulary will be deployed across 54 districts.

According to sources, some sensitive cities that are highly prone to suffer terrorism include Rawalpindi, Lahore, Jhang, Multan,Karachi, Quetta, Peshawar, Hangu, Mianwali, Bhakkar, DI Khan and DG Khan.The interior ministry acquired 12 helicopters under security arrangements, establishing a special control room at the ministry building. Rangers and police were deployed outside Mosques and Imam Bargahs and other sensitive areas and the route of main procession was sealed.
