Pyongyang (August 27, 2018): North Korea has announced to release a detained Japanese tourist on humanitarian grounds.

There is very little information available on Tomoyuki Sugimoto that he was arrested last month. North Korea has not mentioned any reason of his detention, but stated that he was arrested for breaking the law.Japanese media said that he could have been filming a military facility. It is pertinent to mention here that tourists visiting North Korea are being strictly monitored at all times.

Mr. Sugimoto, who is in his late 30s, is believed to have been detained while with a tour group in Nampo, on the west coast. Nampo is home to a naval base and weapons factory.
