NAB Submits Reply To IHC Over Nawaz’s Pleas

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) submitted its reply to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday over pleas submitted by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif seeking suspension of sentence in Al-Azizia reference.

The anti-corruption watchdog in its reply pleaded the court to reject the pleas after declaring the sentence as non-bailable.

The reply stated that Nawaz Sharif will not be given bail on medical grounds as best medical facilities were being provided to the incarcerated premier in the country.

A divisional bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani was hearing petitions submitted by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif today. Earlier, a notice was issued to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case.

On Monday, the court remarked that withdrawal of plea was right of petitioner, while a notice was issued to the anti-corruption watchdog.

The first petition stated that verdict given by the accountability court was based on misunderstanding as the provided evidences were not read out in appropriate perspective. It was also stated that the court pronounced the verdict without listening arguments of the accused person.

The second petition was filed by Nawaz’s lawyer on January 26 seeking his release on medical grounds. It was stated that health condition of the former premier was unsatisfactory as he was suffering from cardiac and kidney diseases. The court was pleaded to approve bail plea of the former premier before pronouncement of verdicts in appeals in Al-Aziadia and Flagship references.
