AC Adjourns Hearing In Avenfield Ref Case Till 2:00 PM

Islamabad (April 23, 2018): The accountability court-I headed by Judge Muhammad Bashir on Monday adjourned the hearing into the Avenfield Apartments Reference Case till 2:00 AM today after the main witness of the case and FIA Deputy Director Wajid Zia did not appear before the court today.

Nawaz and his family are facing three corruption cases in the accountability court after the National Accountability Bureau filed references against them in light of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the Panama Papers case.

The court also adjourned the hearing into Al Azizia Mills reference case till tomorrow and also allowed the two members of the Sharif family, Nawaz and Maryam, to skip the remaining proceedings of the court.

The NAB was granted permission from the accountability court to produce a new witness, DG NAB operations Zahir Shah, into the case in order to produce new evidences and he would appear before the court today for recording his statement.

Earlier in the day, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain Retired Safdar reached Islamabad to appear before the accountability court in the Avenfield Properties Reference case.

On April, 20, the Accountability Court has rejected plea of the sharif family of 7 days exemption from the appearance.

The judge of the Accountability Court Islamabad -I, Muhammad Bashir reserved the judgement earlier after hearing arguments of the lawyers.

The accountability court accepted prosecution’s plea to submit fresh evidence in the case avenfield properties case against Sharif  Family.

Earlier on April 20, soon after the hearing resumed, the counsel of sharif family filed exemption plea from today’s hearing of the sharif family, which was accepted by the court , whereas Captain Retired Safdar has appeared before the court.

Earlier on April 17, the counsel of Maryam Nawaz had concluded his cross examination of Wajid Zia in Avenfield Reference, Judge Muhammad Bashir adjourned the hearing of the case until April 20.

Background of The Cases:

The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017.

NAB to file three supplementary references against Nawaz

The corruption references, filed against the Sharifs, pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.Nawaz and sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.
