Nawaz, Maryam Arrive At Jati Umra

Lahore (September 12, 2018): Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz, son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar and other family members have arrived at Jati Umra via a special plane, in the wee hours of Wednesday, after being released from Adiala Jail on parole to attend the funeral prayer of his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz wife who died in London on Tuesday.

Former First Lady, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz passed away at London’s Harley Street Clinic after a prolonged battle with cancer on Tuesday. She died of cancer at the age of 68 years.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif, Khawaja Asif and other family members of the Sharif family also reached Lahore on the same flight.

The Sharif family has been shifted to Jati Umra, the residence of Nawaz Sharif near Raiwind, from the airport amid tight security.

Meanwhile, Punjab Home Ministry has declared three rooms of Jati Umra as a sub-jail in a notification issued in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, the wife of the former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif, on Tuesday passed away at London’s Harley Street Clinic after a prolonged battle with cancer.

A notification issued by the Punjab Home Department said that the three were released for 12 hours to attend the funeral of Kulsoom Nawaz. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif was also along with the family.

Sources further informed that Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar will remain within the boundaries of Jati Umra during their 12-hour release on parole.

Earlier, Shehbaz Sharif, leader of the opposition in National Assembly, had formally requested the Punjab Home Department to release his brother Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (R) Mohammad Safdar for five days to attend the funeral and last rituals of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.Begum Kulsoom was under treatment at London’s Harley Street Clinic since June 2014. According to sources, the Sharif family has decided to bring back Begum Kulsoom’s body to Pakistan.

Former PM Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, who are serving sentence in Adiala Jail, have also been informed about the demise of Begum Kulsoom, who will be granted parole for the funeral and burial of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.Earlier, Begum Kulsoom’s health deteriorated last night as she developed a lungs problem again, the sources said.

She was placed on ventilator by the doctors.

PML-N president and Nawaz’s younger brother, Shehbaz Sharif, said the party and Pakistan’s democratic process are indebted to Begum Kulsoom.

“An era has come to an end,” he said.

“She played an exemplary role as a mother, sister, daughter and wife,” Shehbaz said.

The PML-N president continued, “She fought bravely in the most difficult times.”“Her death is a huge loss and I am in shock,” he stated.

The ex-prime minister’s wife was admitted to the hospital on June 14 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Begum Kulsoom was diagnosed with lymphoma (throat) cancer in August.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz had flown to London several times to inquire about the health of Kulsoom Nawaz.

Family sources told that Begum Kulsoom had inquired about Nawaz and Maryam last night but was not informed about their conviction.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed deep grief and sorrow over the demise of Begum Kulsoom.

In a statement, the prime minister said all facilities will be provided to the family and heirs of Begum Kulsoom as per law.

The prime minister has directed Pakistani High Commission in London to assist in the provision of all necessary facilities to the heirs of the deceased.

Army Chief General Qamar Jawed Bajwa also expressed grief over Begum Kulsoom’s death and extended condolences to her family.

Chairman PPP, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Co-Chairman PPP, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, State Minister for Interior, Shahryar Afridi and others expressed grief condoled the bereaved family.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz Profile:

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was born on March 29, 1950 in a Kashmiri family. Kulsoom passed his graduation from Islamia College Lahore and completed MA in Urdu poetry from Punjab University. She also received a Ph.D degree.

She had the honour of serving as the first lady thrice. She is the granddaughter of legendary wrestler Ghulam Mohammad Baksh known as ‘Gama Pahalwan’.She tied the knot with Nawaz Sharif on April 2, 1970. Kulsoom was blessed with two sons and two daughters. She became the First Lady of Pakistan on November 6, 1990.Begum Kulsoom Nawaz had to raise voice in favour of his husband, when then General Pervez Musharraf taken over the government from Nawaz Sharif on October 12, 1999 and the seasonal birds had left Nawaz alone. She quit the party leadership in 2002.In July 2017, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court. PML-N nominated Begum Kulsoom Nawaz as a candidate for NA-120 by polls. The seat fall vacant after the disqualification of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Unfortunately Begum Kulsoom Nawaz diagnosed with throat cancer and she left for London for surgery on August 17.

Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of former Prime Minister has decided to oversee the election campaign for her ailing mother.She has run the election campaign of her mother very actively, nicely and elegantly.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz leaves behind four children, two daughters Asma and Maryam, two sons Hasan and Hussain.
