Need To Focus On Our Own Interests: Shehryar Afridi

Islamabad (November 20, 2018): Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi said that Pakistan does not need to pay attention to what the world is saying and only focus on its own interests.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad, Afridi said, “We sacrificed lives in the War on Terror and its results should come forward. Every nation and its leader has the right to express their views.”

He remarked, “We have to assure the world and humanity that our sacrifices will not go to waste. We do not need to pay attention to what the world is saying and should only focus on our own interests”.

Earlier today, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that Pakistan had paid with blood in the United States-led war on terror. The comments followed President Donald Trump’s diatribe against Pakistan in which he accused Islamabad of taking billions of dollars in aid and not doing “a damn thing” for the US.

“Pakistan has paid with blood in the war on terror. We lost 75000 people and our economy lost an estimated $123 billion,” Qureshi said in his tweet.

“The United States is safer today because of our contributions and it’s a shame to hear statements that don’t take those facts into account.”

Earlier yesterday (November 19), Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a series of tweets also responded to Trump’s allegations, criticising the US president for accusing Pakistan.

“Trump’s false assertions add insult to the injury Pak has suffered in US WoT in terms of lives lost & destabilised & economic costs. He needs to be informed abt historical facts,” Khan said.“Pak has suffered enough fighting US’s war. Now we will do what is best for our people & our interests.”

Khan’s statement was a response to Trump’s tweets on Monday in which he accused Pakistan of taking billions of dollars in aid from the United States without giving anything in return. Earlier on Sunday (November 18), US President Donald Trump lambasted Islamabad by saying that the country ‘doesn’t do a damn thing for us’ as well as claiming that Pakistan helped shelter the then al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden.Pakistan Always Given Us ‘Deceits and Lies’: Trump Trump also defended his administration’s decision to pull hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Islamabad in an interview to US TV.

“You know, living – think of this – living in Pakistan, beautifully in Pakistan in what I guess they considered a nice mansion, I don’t know, I’ve seen nicer,” Trump said, referring to bin Laden and his former compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
