Nepal: Glacial lake close to Mount Everest drained

KATHMANDU: Nepal has successfully drained giant glacial lake Imja Tsho near Mount Everest partially to reduce risk of a disastrous flood that could have threatened thousands of lives.

Quoting scientists the foreign news agency said that climate change is causing Himalayan glaciers to melt at an alarming rate which in turn is resulting in creation of huge glacial lakes that may burst to cause immense devastation.

Located at an altitude of 5,010 metres just 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) south of the world’s highest peak Everest Imja Tsho is the fastest-growing glacial lake in Nepal.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Nepa last year had raised alarm about the risks of flash flooding caused by glacial lakes.

Nepalese government worked together with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to drain the lake.
