CHRISTCHURCH: Kiwis have commenced World Cup journey with astonishing start by grabbing victory against Sri Lanka with 98 runs in the first match played at Hagley Oval on Saturday (today).
Sri Lankan batsmen were outclassed by New Zealand bowlers that restricted them all to continue steady chase of 332 runs set up by Kiwis for only 6 wickets with CJ Anderson’s 75 and skipper BB McCullum’s 65 as top two scorers from their side.
HDRL Thirimanne 65 and TM Dilshan 24 made steady start for their team but after their dismissals nobody became successful to take control of the match for Sri Lanka except AD Mathews’s tough retaliation with 46 runs. One down KC Sangakkara managed to add only 39 runs on the scoreboard.
TG Southee, TA Boult, AF Milne, DL Vettori and CJ Anderson grabbed two wickets each while Anderson became most disastrous for Sri Lanka as he took two wickets for only 18 runs in 3.1 overs.
