Nine Lost Life in Lahore Rain, CM Announces Compensation

Lahore (July 03, 2018): As many as nine people lost their lives, while 10 got injured in rain-related incidents in Lahore, which started last night in Lahore, various areas of the city were inundated in water. Hasan Askari announced that Rs0.8 million will be given to the families of deceased.

According to meteorological department, 177 mm of rain is recorded till now.

Due to continuous rainfall and lack of drainage, rainwater inundated most of the major city roads and entered houses situated in low-lying areas.MD WASA issued rain emergency, while caretaker chief minister has also ordered the relevant personnel to stay on field.

Affected areas of Lahore includes Shadbagh, Badamibagh, Lakshmi, Bhati, Ferozepur Road, GPO Chowk, Shahdara and others.

Heavy rain lasted for more than an hour, resulting in death of at least three people, including two policemen due to electric current. While three more, including a woman and two kids died as the house wall collapsed.According to met department, this series of rainfall in Lahore is expected to continue for three more days.

In Lahore, rain reveals the poor governance system of the city. Due to poor management, water has engulfed the city and has got into many low-lying houses. Attendance was less than usual in offices, as roads and streets are completely blocked by water.

On the other hand, 170 feeders tripped due to heavy rain, causing power outages in various areas of Lahore.Rainfall also disrupted flight operations at Allama Iqbal International Airport. Four international flights scheduled to land at the airport were delayed while a flight from Dammam was diverted to Multan.

Earlier, the caretaker chief minister Hassan Askari finally took notice of the situation after 16 hours and visited rain-affected areas of the city.

He went to Laxmi Chowk, GPO, Nisbat Road and adjourning areas and monitored the activities of the WASA and other department.

The Chief Minister directed the WASA to make adequate arrangements for smooth drainage of the rain waters and provide all possible relief to the residents.

Caretaker CM directed authorities to expedite relief operations and solved out issues of the locals at earliest.Askari also constituted investigation committee to probe emergence of sinkhole on Lahore’s Mall road and instructed them to compile the report as soon as possible.

Askari apprised reporters that metropolis had witnessed such heavy downpour again after span of 30 years.

The downpour — among the heaviest rains in recent decades — paralyzed life in the city and also exposed flaws in its sewer system, which flooded some of the streets in residential areas.

Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Imran Khan also visited rain affected areas of metropolis on Tuesday and said that PML-N wasted tax money of the masses, warned Shahbaz Sharif not to come out as the situation of Lahore is worst after rain.

PTI’s Aleem Khan and other leaders also joined Imran Khan, during this visit.

Imran Khan said that Shahbaz Sharif only did dramas, nothing else during his tenure.He said that fate of the country will be changed after July 25 elections.

Later, Former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif also visited his constituency NA-132 in Lahore after the rain and blamed the caretaker government for the situation in Lahore following heavy rain that submerged the provincial capital.
