KARACHI: None of the coastal areas in Pakistan, including Karachi, are under threat from a cyclone developing in the Arabian Sea, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre of PMD informed that the well-marked low-pressure area in the East Arabian Sea has strengthened into a depression and lay centred around Latitude 11.7N and Longitude 71.0E, at a distance of about 1500 km south of Karachi.
“The system is likely to move initially north/northwest-ward and strengthen further into a tropical cyclone during the next 36 hours,” it said in a statement.
“Currently none of Pakistan coastal areas is under threat from this system.”
The Met Office, however, advised fishermen in Sindh to remain alert and not to venture in deep sea during this period.
It also requested concerned authorities and stakeholders to keep them abreast of system updates through PMD website.
