Oldest Pet Shelter Makes it to Guinness World Records

Web Desk (December 1, 2017): Batterseaa Dogs and Cats home has been in place since 1871 and is responsible for providing shelter to homeless animals for the last 147 years. The shelter is responsible for caring 3.1 million cats and dogs.

Mary Tealby laid the grounds in 1871 when she felt too many stray dogs were roaming the streets of London during the Victorian era.

In 1871 it was relocated to its current place and has been there ever since. The kennels are named after the compassionate founder, Mary.

The shelter has seen all kinds of ups and downs throughout the years but has played a significant role in changing people’s attitudes toward animal welfare.
