Opposition Protests Outside ECP Over Alleged Rigged Polls

Islamabad (August 08, 2018): Opposition parties staged a protest demonstration outside secretariat of Election Commission of Pakistan in Islamabad against, what they called, rigging in general election.

Leaders and election candidates of PML(N), PPP, MMA, ANP and PkMAP participated in the protest.

Talking to newsmen on the occasion, senior leader of PML(N) Raja Zafarul Haq and former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani said they have gathered to convey a message that the elections were not free, fair and transparent.Meanwhile, security has been tightened due to protest in the red zone.

On the other hand, protests were also held in Karachi, Quetta, Banu, Dera Murad Jamali, Qila Abdullah and other parts of the country.

Sit-in protest of JUI-F was held at the National Highway of Sindh-Balochistan in Dera Murad Jamali, due to which commuters ffaced problems.

On the other hand, business activities at the Pak-Afghan Border at Chaman have been suspended due to protest against alleged rigging in the polls. Earlier on, it was announced by the joint opposition to protest outside the ECP.

PML-N leader Mushahid Hussain Syed said that they would protest outside the ECP office against rigging of recently-held General Election 2018.

He said that his party was in contact with MMA, Awami National Party (ANP) and Qaumi Watan Party (QWP). “We have also spoken to Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Hasil Bizenjo and other parties.”Syed further said that they would decide as to how long the protest wound last, upon reaching outside the ECP office.

The PML-N leader said that it would be a grand protest against delay in election results, polls rigging and mismanagement.

Earlier on August 03, Opposition parties finalized the names of candidates for the posts of prime minister, speaker and deputy speaker but names will be disclosed on the day of elections in the lower house.

This was decided in a meeting held at the residence of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq that was attended by members of the joint opposition.Opposition parties during a multi-party meeting presided over by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday decided to take oath in parliament.

PPP leader Sherry Rehman said that all political parties had decided to take the oath and insisted they would give the incoming government a tough time in parliament.She said that all parties had reached consensus on various points and the opposition parties jointly decided that the opposition’s joint candidate for PM would be from the PML-N, while the opposition’s joint candidate for NA speaker and deputy speaker would be from PPP and MMA respectively.
