Dubai Test: Solid Performance By Pakistani Openers

Dubai (October 07, 2018): Pakistan openers Mohammad Hafeez and Imam-ul-Haq delivered a solid performance of 131 runs in the first of the two Test match series against Australia on Sunday a while ago.

Hafeez and Imam remained unbeaten on 71 and 50 respectively after Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and opted to bat on the grassless pitch.

Pakistan handed a debut to allrounder Bilal Asif, while Mohammad Hafeez returned to the Test side after a two-year absence. Wahab Riaz, missing from Pakistan’s tours of Ireland and England, also slotted back in.Tim Paine, the Australia captain, also felt this was a ‘bat first’ pitch. They handed baggy greens to Aaron Finch, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne. Australia will look to turn around a poor run in Asia, where they’ve won only three and lost 19 Tests in the past decade. The last time the sides met in the UAE in 2014, Pakistan won 2-0.

The sides have played 62 Tests against each other out of which 31 have been won by Australia and 14 by Pakistan with 17 having ended in draws. However,In their previous Test series in UAE (2014), Pakistan completely outplayed Aussies by a fascinating 2-0 margin. Buoyed by the batting of Azhar Ali, Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq, the hosts went on to win those games by 221 and 356 runs.Aussies bowling will mostly rely on Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc. Lyon has been their key wicket taker in recent times.

Pakistan has played just three Tests this year two against England and one against Ireland. Their most recent saw them draw with England 1-1.After winning the first Test by nine wickets at Lord’s, they succumbed to an innings defeat inside three days at Headingley. Prior to that, they defeated Ireland in their first Test by five wickets.
