Pakistan hands over surrendered soldier to India at Wahga border

LAHORE: Pakistan on Saturday handed over the Indian soldier, who had crossed Line of Control (LoC) and surrendered himself to Pakistan Army, to BSF official at Wagha border.

The Indian soldier, who was reportedly deserted his post at LOC due to his grievances of maltreatment against his commanders, was convinced by Pakistani authorities to return to India.

Sepoy Chandu Babulal Chohan was returned as a goodwill geniture, Foreign Office spokesman Nafees Zakaria said. The spokesman added that the soldier was handed over to BSF commanders today at 2:30 pm at Wahgah border.

Earlier,  an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement said that sepoy Chandu Babulal Chohan, an Indian Army soldier, stationed in Indian occupied Kashmir, deserted his post at LOC due to his grievances of maltreatment against his commanders. It added that he willfully crossed LOC on 29 September 2016 and surrendered himself to Pakistan Army.

“As a gesture of goodwill and in continuation of our efforts to maintain peace and tranquility along LOC and WB, Sepoy Chandu Babulal Chohan has been convinced to return to his own country and will be handed over to Indian authorities at Wahga Border on humanitarian grounds,” the ISPR statement added.
