Pakistan To Hand Over 147 Fishermen To India Today

Lahore (January 08, 2018): One hundred and forty-seven Indian fishermen released by Pakistan yesterday will be handed over to Indian authorities at Wahga Border Today.

According to police, the fishermen were arrested for fishing illegally within the marine border limits of Pakistan and have completed their prison term.Earlier on December 28, Pakistan had released the first batch of 145 Indian fishermen on Thursday as part of a goodwill gesture. Pakistan has also handed over a list of four hundred and fifty seven Indian prisoners including fifty eight civilians and three hundred and ninety nine fishermen to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad on January 01.

In a statement issued on last Monday, the Foreign Office said the step in line with the provisions of the Consular Access Agreement between Pakistan and India, signed in May 2008.Under the accord, both countries are required to exchange lists of prisoners in each other’s custody twice a year, on 1st of January and 1st of July.Every year hundreds of Indian and Pakistani fishermen are arrested in the Arabian Sea after straying across marine borders. They often suffer in prisons even after serving their sentences because of poor diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Hundreds of Indian fishermen are already imprisoned at District Jail Malir for illegally fishing into Pakistani waters. Earlier this month, 43 Indian fishermen were arrested and their fishing vessels seized.
