ISLAMABAD: The meeting of the leaders of parliamentary parties over the issue of revival of military courts concluded here. The meeting decided to refer the issue to the sub-committee constituted to prepare the draft of constitutional amendment to review the lapsed military courts.

The meeting of the parliamentary parties was held here with Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in the chair.

The PPP, which stayed away from Thursday’s meeting presided over by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, attend the meeting on Friday. PPP’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly Syed Naveed Qamar attended the meeting.

Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that now the sub-committee will deliberate over the draft of constitutional amendments and will finalize it.

The sub-committee, headed by Law Minister Zahid Hamid, will deliberate over draft amendment and will decide the tenure of the court.

He added that the sub-committee was expanded and Senator Talha Mehmood of JUI-F and Senator Barrister Saif of MQM were also included in the committee.

He added that the duration of the military court would be decided by the sub-committee.

It is to be mentioned here that military courts were established and granted permission to try civilians charged with terrorism in Jan 2015 after a terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar in Dec 2014. The courts have been non-functional since Jan 7 after the expiry of the two-year constitutional cover given to them.
