Parveen Shakir’s 23rd Death Anniversary Being Observed

Islamabad (December 26, 2017): Eminent Urdu poetess Parveen Shakir’s 23rd death anniversary is being observed today across the country.

Parveen Shakir started writing at a young age and published her first collection of poetry, ‘Khushbu’ in 1976, which were followed by other works including ‘Sad Burg’ in 1980, ‘Khud Kalami’ in 1990 and ‘Kaf-i-Aina’.

Perveen Shakir gave a subtle combination of classical traditions and modern sensitivity to Urdu poetry, also became the first woman to use true feminism in a man dominated Urdu poetry by using word ‘Larki’ in her writings.She also wrote newspaper columns including ‘Gosha-i-Chashm’ and was awarded the Pride of Performance Award for her contributions to literature.

She worked as a teacher for nine years before she joined the civil services and started working in the Customs Department.She was appointed CBR Secretary in 1986. When she appeared in the Central Superior Services Examination in 1982, there was a question regarding her poetry in the exam.Her collection is a reflection of feminine perspective on love, romance, aloofness, separation and intimacy.

She was popular for her outspoken feminist thoughts and received the country’s highest honor the ‘Pride of Performance’.

This prominent name of poetry died in a road accident when she was heading to her work in Islamabad on 26th December 1994.Image result for Parveen shakirWith her ended the era of Parveen Shakir but she became the inspiration of many budding female poets who followed her path by depicting feminine perspective in their poetry.
