PTI council questions SC Jurisdiction in Imran disqualification case

Islamabad (May 11, 2017): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday raised questions over the jurisdiction of the apex court to hear a petition seeking disqualification of PTI chief Imran Khan and Secretary General Jahangir Tarin.

A full bench of SC headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar heard the petition filed by PML-N leader Hanif Abbasi. Abbasi had alleged that the two PTI leaders had concealed their assets from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) thus they should be disqualified as MNA.

The PTI has also been alleged to receive findings from foreign companies and individuals.

During the course of hearing on Thursday, PTI counsel Anwar Mansoor said that neither the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) nor the apex court had jurisdiction to hear the petition.

Mansoor told the court that only the government has the authority to investigate foreign funding for political parties, adding that if the case was referred to the ECP, the commission would be challenged.

“The government has the authority to investigate allegations of foreign funding. After investigations, the political parties are sent a notice,” he added.

The bench granted Mansoor time to consult with his client regarding the matter being forwarded to the ECP. The case was adjourned till May 23.
