PM Imran Khan Meets Chinese President Xi Jinping

Beijing (November 02, 2018): Prime Minister Imran Khan, held meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing today.

The meeting between the heads of the states held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. High-level delegations from both the sides are also in attendance. Prime Minister discussed the range of bilateral ties of the nations and mutual cooperation for the well being of CPEC.

Among the matters discussed are the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project and ways to further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries, sources said.

According to the sources, PM Imran took the Chinese premier into confidence regarding investments from other countries in the CPEC project.

Pakistan is expected to receive $6 billion economic package from China during PM Imran’s visit. A loan of $1.5 billion is also expected to be offered, along with an additional package of $3 billion for CPEC.The Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet today President Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Jin Liqun.

Later, the Prime Minister will meet Minister for International Department of the Central Committee, Communist Party of China Song Tao.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan reached Beijing on his first official visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese leadership.China’s Minister for Transport Li Xiaopeng, Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing, and senior government officials received the Prime Minister at Beijing Airport.

Pakistan Ambassador to China Masood Khalid was also present.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Asad Umar, Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Minister for Planning Makhdoom Khusro Bukhtiar, Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce, Industry and Investment, Abdul Razzak Dawood and Chief Minister of Balochistan, Jam Mir Kamal.

This was the first visit of PM Imran Khan to China after assuming office. He would discuss whole range of bilateral issues besides inking a number of agreements in meeting with Chinese leadership.

He will also attend China International Import Expo on November 5 in Shanghai. Prime Minister will participate in the opening ceremony of the CIIE, and deliver a keynote speech.The Prime Minister’s visit aimed at reviewing the entire range of bilateral relations and to participate in First China International Import Expo in Shanghai.During the visit, Prime Minister Imran Khan will hold meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

The two sides will also sign several agreements and MoU of cooperation in diverse fields.

Earlier talking to Chinese media in Islamabad Thursday (November 01), the Prime Minister said we can learn from China more than any other country and Chinese experiences will help improve the issues we are facing now.

He said Pakistan is endowed with rich natural resources that have not been utilized.

Imran Khan said corruption is the biggest enemy of Pakistan and we need special skills to track the white collar crime.

The Prime Minister said poverty reduction is most important segment of our manifesto and Chinese policies to lift the people from poverty can guide us in devising indigenous policies in this area. He said Pakistan also wants to improve its exports in order to curtail the current account deficit. He said our main export is textile and Chinese help in giving value addition to our products will improve our prospects of exporting finished products in the world market.

Imran Khan said CPEC is a whole encompassing idea and we are moving to its next phases. He said investment in industrial zones as well as in the socio-economic development is very important for improving the overall economy.

Referring to agriculture, he said this industry needs to be established on modern lines. The Prime Minister said Pakistan enjoys a 700 km long coastline and our fishery industry can be improved to increase its share of seafood in the world. The Prime Minister said Pakistan is looking forward to enhance relations with all friendly countries.He said Saudi Arabia pledged to help us in order to stabilize our economy. He said financial help from friendly countries is much better than taking loans from IMF and other multilateral financial institutions due to their stringent conditions.

The Prime Minister said a tough program has been put in place to improve governance and efforts are also underway to encourage investment friendly environment in the country. Imran Khan said Chinese development model is unique because unlike Western development models that are driven by market, the Chinese one is pushed by the government.
