The PML-N delegation included Senator Chaudhry Tanveer, Tariq Fazl Chaudhry and Anjum Aqeel. The sources said that PML-N offered PPP to field joint opposition’s candidates in the by-polls. Raja claimed that joint opposition can give tough time to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led federal government in and outside the parliament.Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif requested help from the Pakistan Peoples Party leader Asif Ali Zardari in strengthening the grand opposition alliance against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s government, said sources. The PPP leader, Bukhari, maintained that he would convey PML-N’s message to the party leadership and will respond after consultation with the leadership.

Earlier on August 21, the time had again compelled the two rival parties- PML-N and PPP to come closer ahead of the presidential election as members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) met on Tuesday at Shehbaz Sharif’s residence to discuss the upcoming presidential elections.

PPP’s senior leaders Khursheed Shah and Raza Rabbani had met a PML-N delegation comprising of former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal, Ayaz Sadiq and Rana Tanveer.

Ahsan Iqbal said the opposition desires to pitch a joint candidate for the post of president.

However, he said that there will be more dialogue between the opposition after Eidul Azha. Farhatullah Babar has said that Aitzaz Ahsan is not the final candidate, Iqbal added. “Speculations regarding the presidential candidate should be avoided,” he stressed.

If opposition fails to unite, the ruling party will benefit, he added.

On August 17, despite attempts to paper over the cracks, it becomes clear that differences have widened between the PPP and PML-N.The PPP on Thursday, in its parliamentary party’s meeting, decided in principle not to vote for the opposition parties’ candidate and PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif for the prime minister’s post owing to the concerns of the party leadership.

The meeting was held in the Parliament House, which was co-chaired by PPP supremos Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto.
