PML N Meeting Discussing Presidential Election Ends

Lahore (August 21, 2018): Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s top leadership met in Model Town Secretariat today to discuss the up coming presidential elections.

President PML N Shehbaz Sharif is chaired the meeting.

Many top leaders of the party including former Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Ahsan Iqbal, Hamza Shehbaz, Rana Tanveer, Pervez Rasheed, Abdul Qadir Baloch, Javed Latif, Shah Mahmmad Shah, Rana Sanaullah and Engineer Ameer Maqam have reached to attended the crucial meeting.

According to the party sources, Pakistan Muslim League leadership discussed various important matters including upcoming presidential elections in September.

Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan Peoples Party nominated its senior party leaders Aitzaz Ahsan as its presidential candidate.

The party chairman and co-chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari, nominated Ahsan for the president’s slot.

Asif Zardari took Maulana Fazlur Rehman into confidence over the name of Aitzaz Ahsan as Presidential Candidate, Maulana took responsibility to consult with PML-N on the issue.

Earlier on August 18, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry confirmed through social media that PTI Chairman and newly elected Prime Minister Imran Khan has nominated Arif Alvi for President of Pakistan.

Incumbent President Mamnoon Hussain’s tenure ends on September 9.

Alvi emerged victor from NA-247, Karachi constituency during the July 25 polls.

On August 17, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) appointed presiding officers and other polling staff for the presidential election, setting September 4 as the day of the polling.

President Hussain’s five-year term is set to expire on September 9. According to the Constitution, the presidential election must be held at least a month prior to the expiry of the incumbent’s term, which in this case would have been August 8.Briefing ECP meeting, held with the chair of Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza, director elections Chaudhry Nadeem Qasim said that five polling stations have been set up for voting as all four provincial and entire parliament building declared polling stations.

He also mentioned that the presiding officers and polling staff have also been appointed as they have been trained how to proceed the presidential election.

“All the four provincial high courts and Islamabad High Court appointed as presiding officers while a thousand ballot papers have been printed,” he said.

The president is elected by an electoral college comprising members of the Senate, National Assembly and four provincial assemblies. Voting is held through a secret ballot.Ordinarily, the presidential election is held either a month after the General Election, or at least a month before the expiry of the president’s tenure.

Holding a presidential election on Aug 8 was out of the question, however, since neither the National nor the provincial assemblies were functional then.

Schedule for the presidential election:

Aug 27, up to 12 pm: Filing of nomination papers with presiding officers in Islamabad, and with each PO in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta.

Aug 29, at 10 am: Scrutiny of nomination papers by Returning Officer in Islamabad.

Aug 30, up to 12 pm: Withdrawal of candidate before RO in Islamabad.

Sept 4, 10am-4pm: Polling day. Elections will take place at Parliament House, Islamabad; Provincial Assembly Building; Lahore, Provincial Assembly Building, Karachi; Provincial Assembly Building, Peshawar; and the Provincial Assembly Building, Quetta.
