Profile of PPPs Presidential Candidate, Aitzaz Ahsan

Web Desk (September 04, 2018): Pakistan Peoples Party has named Aitzaz Ahsan as its presidential candidate. Aitzaz Ahsan is one of the high-profile personalities of Pakistan. He offered valuable services for stability of democracy and judiciary rehabilitation. Have a look at the political career of Aitzaz Ahsan. 

PPP’s presidential candidate Aitzaz Ahsan was born on September 27, 1945 in Murree. He received his early education from Aitchison College.

His forefathers have also been in the similar field and were members of National Assembly. Later he studied law at Cambridge University, UK and got first position in CSS exams, in Pakistan. Aitzaz Ahsan started his political career in the 1970 and got the Punjab Ministry of Information, Planning and Development from PPP.

He has also been the Law Minister, Interior Minister and Education Minster from 1988 to 1993. In 1994 he was elected to the Senate of Pakistan.

In Senate of Pakistan, he sat as Leader of the Opposition until 1999.He is also an indefatigable human rights activist and a founder & vice-president of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. He has been incarcerated under arbitrary detention laws many times by military and authoritarian regimes.

Ahsan is the author of the book ‘The Indus Saga and the Making of Pakistan’ and its Urdu translation, ‘Sindh Sagar Aur Qyam-e-Pakistan’ which presents the cultural history of Pakistan. He is known for representing and leading the lawyers campaign to reinstate former Chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.He was house arrest in his house in Lahore for five months. He was released in March 2008. After his release, he played an important role in judiciary rehabilitation and removing Pervez Musharraf. He was a senator from 2012-2018.
