Web Desk (September 04, 2018): President of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam(F), Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman is presidential candidate of all opposition parties, except Pakistan People’s Party. He is son of Mufti Mahmud.
Maulana Fazl-ur-Rahman was born on June 19, 1953 in village Abdul Khel, Dera Ismail Khan. He received his early education from a regional religious Madarsa, after which he passed exams of B.A. in Islamic Studies, from Peshawar University, with flying colors. Later, he went to Al-Azhar university in Egypt, and received degree of M.A.There he received his education in religious studies, and did research in same field. In 1987, he published his research work on the topic of political views of Islam.
Rehman begun his political career as the secretary general of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, after the death of his father Mufti Mahmud who was the leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.Chairman of JUI(F), Rehman was elected as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in 1988 general elections, from D.I.Khan seat.
Rehman ran for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Pakistani general elections, 1990 for the second time on from D.I.Khan seat. Rehman was elected as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Pakistani general elections, 1993 for the third time, but this time on Islamic Jamhoori Mahaz ticket from D.I.Khan seat.
Later, Rehman was appointed as the chairman of the Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs in National Assembly of Pakistan. Rehman ran for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Pakistani general elections, 1997 for the fourth time however couldn’t win the election.Rehman led several anti-American protest, and pro-Taliban rallies in the major cities of Pakistan following the war in Afghanistan in 2001.
In October 2001, Pervez Musharraf placed Rahman under house arrest in his native village Abdul Khel. Later in March 2002, Rehman was set free and the cases against him were withdrawn.Rehman was elected as the member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Pakistani general elections, 2002 for the third time on Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal ticket. He won on two seats, NA-24 and NA-25. He was elected chairman of the Kashmir committee of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
For the 2018 Presidential elections, that are scheduled today, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman has been namted as presidential candidate by PML-N and other opposition parties, except for PPP, who nominated Aitzaz Ahsan for the post. Following this, two candidates will be participating from opposition in presidential elections today.
