Basra (September 08, 2018): Protesters have taken to streets against corruption in Iraqi city, Basra. Protesters have torched Iranian consulate in Basra.

Protesters in the southern Iraqi city of Basra have taken to the streets again to protest against corruption and a lack of basic services. Curfew has been imposed in the city after continuous protests against government. While, protesters have also torched Iranian consulate in the city.Unrest has continued throughout the summer but at least seven people have been killed in clashes this week alone.

Basra’s predominantly Shia province is home to 70% of Iraq’s oil reserves but residents complain of decades of neglect from the central government. The assault contributed to a growing sense that Iraq is slipping into a period of dangerous instability as powerful political parties remain locked in a struggle over the composition of the country’s next government.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on the consulate, saying the assault harms Iraq’s interests and is unrelated to demonstrators’ demands for basic services and clean water.
