PTI To Challenge ECP Decision of Re-polling in PK 23

Islamabad (August 10, 2018): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Shaukat Yousafzai said on Friday that he will challenge the Election Commission of Pakistan’s orders of withholding results of PK-23 Shangla over lower female voter turnout during 2018 general elections.

Women votes were less than 10 percent of the total polled votes in the constituency, it added.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Shaukat Yousafzai had emerged victor from PK-23 during the July 25 polls.

Earlier, the ECP had withheld Yousafzai’s victory notification.

According to records, 86,698 women were registered to vote from the constituency. However, only 3,505 women cast their votes in violation of ECP regulations. Before the elections, the ECP had said that results of any constituency would be declared invalid should the female turnout be lower than 10 per cent.

Only 3,500 out of 86,698 registered women voters used their right of franchise in the constituency while 66,000 out of 114,000 male voters participated in the democratic exercise, resulting in a 34% total turnout on July 25.

Earlier on July 22, the Election Commission of Pakistan warned elders and candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against any attempt to bar women from casting their votes. The commission cautioned against preventing women from voting that day, as it will bring into effect section 9 of the Elections Act 2017 which gives the ECP power to declare a poll void in that particular area.

The individuals found responsible will not only be fined for the crime but also put behind bars, said ECP.

According to the polling scheme, there are a total of 6.61 million female voters in the province.
