ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) has proposed Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid suggested for the post of chief election commissioner (CEC). “Zahid has an untarnished career and no one can point a finger at him. He can never be pressurized by anyone; we think by appointing him as CEC, we will be doing a great service to Pakistan,” said PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi in a joint media talks with Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah.
Voicing concerns over certain names suggested by government for the post, Qureshi said that some of the nominees have political affiliations and that his party would protest if they are appointed. He, however, said that Justice (retd) Rana Bhagwandas would be to PTI if appointed.
Khursheed Shah met Qureshi to discuss the appointment of new CEC.
The Supreme Court has fixed November 16 as the deadline to fill the vacant post. Addressing the media after consulting Qureshi, Shah said he does not want the appointment of CEC to be controversial, which is why he was meeting leaders of political parties to reach a consensus. “Both of us (the PPP and the PTI) believe last year’s elections were not fair and we want to make the ECP an independent and impartial institution,” he said.
