PTI Will Not Tolerate Any Delay in Election Process

Web Desk (December 21, 2017): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan Thursday said that his party will not tolerate any delay in election process.

“Governance chaos exists because of political vacuum in Pakistan today,” the PTI chief said in a tweet, maintaining that early elections are the only solution to it.

He said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), following passage of the relative constitutional amendment, is duty bound to complete process of delimitation of new constituencies as soon as possible.

Preferably, the process should be completed in three months, Khan added.

Earlier on December 19, the National Assembly had passed the bill on November 16 with a two-third majority to consider the provisional results of Census 2017 in delimitation of new constituencies for the upcoming general elections in 2018.A total of 84 senators voted in favour of motion while one opposed it.

The 24th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2017 will allow the conduct of delimitation of constituencies on the basis of provisional census results. The National Assembly had already passed the bill last month.

The bill known as Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2017, pertains to fresh delimitation of the constituencies in accordance with the provisional results of the latest census for upcoming General Elections in 2018.Earlier on December 15, a meeting of parliamentary parties’ leaders chaired by Prime Minister had agreed to pass the pending constitutional bill regarding the delimitation of constituencies as per fresh population census from Senate on December 19.

Under the terms of the amendment, while the number of NA seats will remain the same, Punjab will lose out on seats as its share in Pakistan’s population has fallen to 52pc in 2017 from 56pc in 1998.Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will gain the seats lost by Punjab, while Sindh’s share will remain the same.

The National Assembly passed this bill on November 16, 2017 with a two-third majority to consider the provisional results of census 2017 to make delimitation of constituencies for upcoming general elections 2018. A total of 233 members voted in favour of it and one member opposed it.

Until its passage on Tuesday, voting on the said bill had been postponed five times in the Senate.
