Rains, snow cause havoc in Chitral, Cold wave to continue

Rains and snow have caused havoc in Chitral where 14 people died and another ten were injured from avalanche fall as over 30 houses and the check post of Chitral Scourts were buried by avalanche. One soldier was martyred while another six were injured when avalanche hit the check post of Chitral Scouts.

Meanwhile, Pak Army continues the rescue and relief works in areas badly effected by rains and snow in the upper areas of the country.

Heavy rains and snowfall continue lashing Chitral intermittently during the last three says. Eight houses were buried under an avalanche in Shershah Valley of Garam Chashma. Pak Army recovered nine bodies and rescued four others alive during the rescue operation in the effected area. Avalanche hit the check post of Chitral Scouts in Moghu area martyring a personnel of the FC and injuring six other personnel who were rescued safely.

According to ISPR contingents of Pak Army, PDMA, and local administration took part in the rescue operation. According to spokesman of the Pak Army rescue works and supply of food by helicopters will speed up once the weather gets clear.

The Karakoram Highway remains closed for traffic at many places due to rock fall while people are moving to safer places due to fear of melting glaciers and the resultant floods.

Meanwhile, the cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the country during the next twelve hours.

However, rain-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected at isolated places of Malakand division, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Temperature recorded in some major cities recorded on Monday morning were: Islamabad and Lahore nine degree centigrade, Karachi twelve, Peshawar seven, Quetta minus five, Gilgit minus one, Murree one and Muzaffarabad six degree centigrade.
