ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has defeated its rival India on parliamentary diplomacy as Senator Raza Rabbani has elected member of the executive committee of Asia Pacific Group (APG) by defeating Indian candidate Sashi Tharoor.
According to details, a Pakistani parliamentary delegation in the Chair of Speaker National Assembly (NA) Asad Qaiser attended a general assembly session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union consisting up of 188 countries in the city of Belgrade, Serbia.
According to a press release issued Asia pacific countries had to elect a unanimous member for the executive committee and Pakistani parliament had nominated Senator Raza Rabbani for the post.
As per the release, Pakistan had demanded a secret ballot on which Indian delegation tried to delay the elections, however seeing its defeat Indian candidate announced to withdraw and accepted its defeat.
India had nominated Congress member of Lok Sabha Shashi Tharoor at the last time while Indian efforts could not get support any of country included in 34-member Asia Pacific Group while after India’s candidate withdrew from the election Senator Raza Rabbani elected as a member of Executive committee uncontested, the press release added.
Senator Raza Rabbani will be the member of the executive committee for the three-year term while Senator Javed Abbassi will the member of the drafting committee.
The Asia pacific group also elected Senator Sherry Rehman as a member of the committee for durable development, finance and trade.
