Remembering Mirza Ghalib on 150th Death Anniversary

WEB DESK: 150th death anniversary of classical Urdu and Persian poet Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib is being observed on Friday.

Ghalib is the most-loved, read and quoted poet of Urdu language in the world. His ghazals have been interpreted and sung in many different ways by different people as his writing which is still extremely popular among the Hindustani diaspora.

Mirza Ghalib is a name that is synonymous with Urdu poetry. Born as Mirza Asadullah Khan, Ghalib was a pen name that he adopted. He achieved immense fame with this.

Every person who is a fan of Urdu poetry loves Mirza Ghalib’s poetry. Mirza Ghalib was born in Agra in Turkish aristocratic ancestry on 27th December, 1797.

Mirza Ghalib was one of the important poets in the court of Bahadur Shah Zafar II. The emperor, who was also his student, honoured Ghalib with royal titles of Dabber-ul-Mulk and Najm-ud-daulah. These titles helped Ghalibs enter the nobility of Delhi. Here are some of his most famous couplets.

Ghalib was married at a very young age to Umrao Begum after which he moved to Delhi where he lived till his death. It is said that he had seven children with her but none of them survived for more than 15 months.

He breathed his last in his famous haveli, Gali Qasim Jaan at Chandni Chowk, in 1869. It is also known as Ghalib ki Haveli. This 300-year old haveli has been turned into ‘Ghalib Memorial’.
