Rigged Polls Probe: Pervez Khattak To Head Committee

Islamabad (September 28, 2018): Prime Minister on Friday has approved Pervez Khattak as head of the special committee set up to probe the rigging in General Elections 2018 as alleged by the opposition.

Parvez Khattak holds the portfolio of defence minister in PTI lead Government.

The committee comprises of 12 members each from National Assembly, Senate. The government and opposition have submitted their respective members’ names to NA Speaker Asad Qaiser represent them in equilibrium.The Speaker will formally announce nominations in the House to be followed by notification to the effect. The probe committee will define the Terms of Reference (TORs).

The formation of the probe committee has come into existence in the wake of rigging charges levelled by opposition parties coupled with full throated, persistent demand to investigate the alleged misdoings in recent General Elections.Poll Rigging: PML-N Nominates Members For Commission Earlier on September 24, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) nominated members for the probe commission formed to investigate alleged rigging during the election 2018.

The decision was taken in a party high-level meeting chaired by party chief Shehbaz Sharif as at the beginning of the Fateh was offered for the bereaved soul of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

The PML-N fielded Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Tanveer, Rana Sanaullah as candidates for the body during a parliamentary meeting chaired by party president Shahbaz Sharif at Parliament House.Party leadership also discussed the recent mini-budget presented by the PTI government. Shahbaz criticised the mini-budget, saying that while the PML-N government had previously allocated Rs23 billion for dams in the budget, the PTI-led government had not allocated a single rupee for the purpose.

He further said that ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, during his time in office, had allocated Rs122bn for the acquisition of land for the Diamer-Bhasha Dam.

Syed Khursheed Shah, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Naveed Qamar named as member for the committee who will represent PPP.

Earlier on September 18, a resolution was presented in the National Assembly for the formation of an investigative commission to probe rigging allegations during the July 25 polls.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi presented the resolution which is being currently discussed by parliamentary members.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Shazia Marri took to the floor and recommended that the leader of the opposition in NA should chair the commission to ensure transparency.

Syed Naveed Qamar demanded that the head of this committee should be from the opposition.
