Role of Women in Independence Movement

Web Desk (August 10, 2018): Women played a pivotal and unparalleled role in Independence movement.

Mother of the nation Fatima Jinnah, Begum Molana Muhammad Ali Jauhar, Begum Salma Tassaduq Hussain, Begum Jehan Ara Shahnawaz, Begum Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan, Begum Shaista Ikram-ul-Hassan are to name a few, among many women who did uncountable sacrifices during independence movement. A galaxy of women had emerged in the leadership role of the Muslim League, organizing and mobilizing in the cities and also at the district level.

Fatima Jinnahwas always at his side, a visible symbol of the new woman, advising and participating in all the activities of the Quaid, and not tucked away at home minding the kitchen.

Salma Tassaduq Hussain successfully contested on the Muslim League ticket for the Punjab Provincial Assembly seat from the inner Lahore constituency, winning by an overwhelming majority. She worked very hard during the Bihar riots, helped the Bihar refugees in their camps, and staying for nearly two months in the affected areas.

During the Partition riots, as a Refugee Relief Secretary in the provincial Muslim League office, women fulfilled the responsibilities of the boarding and lodging of refugees in camps.
