Samsung Galaxy S8 to feature facial recognition

Samsung is reportedly adding facial recognition to its upcoming flagship device Galaxy S8 to make unlocking your phone more convenient.

Samsung is adding the feature to complement the iris scanner on its flagship device. “Due to some limits of iris scanning such as speed and accuracy, we have decided to add facial recognition to the Galaxy S8,” a Samsung official told the media.

“With a face scanner, it will take less than 0.01 seconds to unlock the phone,” he added. Samsung’s decision to include boosted facial recognition feature comes amid speculation that Apple is looking to replace its fingerprint scanner with a face scanner on the iPhone 8, which is slated to be released in September.

Samsung intended to release the devices on April 21, after unveiling it on March 29 in New York. In a video leaked last month, a newer USB C port can be spotted at the bottom of the device along with a much appreciated 3.5mm headphone jack.

Rumours also suggest the S8 devices have Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB RAM. The S8 is also expected to include Samsung’s new dock, giving it a desktop-like experience. The new ‘DEX’ feature will make the Android device function like a personal computer when docked.
