SC Adjourns Nehal Contempt Case Till 1:00 PM

Islamabad (March 27, 2018): The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing into Contempt case from PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi till 1:00 am after the lawyers asked for some time to consult on the issue to revoke his bar license. 

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar resumed hearing the contempt of court case against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nehal Hashmi today.

As proceedings began, lawyers’ leader Rasheed A Rizvi requested the court to briefly adjourned the hearing as several lawyers’ leaders are present and will consult and inform the court of their opinion on how to proceed with the case.

Supreme Court Bar Association President Pir Khurshid Kaleem was also present in court. On seeing him, the chief justice remarked, “you are the pir of your area and ours as well”.

The hearing was then adjourned until 1pm.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court adjourned the indictment proceeding of former PML-N senator Nehal Hashmi for one day while seeking the help of senior lawyers in deciding about his punishment.

During the hearing of contempt case, Hashmi once again apologized from the judges saying that he has never named the judiciary in his speeches.

The three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar played the video clip of the PML-N leader’s latest controversial remarks against the judiciary.

The senior lawyers were also summoned by the court for their opinion on the case and said that he would have asked the lawyers for justice if his son had done the same thing.

The chief justice further remarked that they would also consider over revoking Hashmi’s license.

Senior lawyers Barrister Farogh Naseem and Rasheed A. Rizvi told the court that Hashmi’s remarks were not justifiable in any way.Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) president Qalb Hussain said the court should have mercy on Hashmi as he had tendered an apology.

The CJP said the court will look into what room there was in the Constitution with regards to suspension of licences.

The court directed the presidents of Supreme Court Bar Association and Pakistan Bar Council to appear before it on Tuesday to give their opinions.
