SC conditionally allows Pemra to hold DHT bidding

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the stay granted by Lahore High Court against bidding for DTH license by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and conditionally allowed the authority to hold the bidding for DHT.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Mushir Alam heard the appeal of Perma against LHC decision restraining the authority to go on with the bidding of DHT.

The bench set aside the LHC order and conditionally allowed Pemra to hold the bidding. However, the court restrained it from granting license of SHT till the disposal of instant matter.

The bidding for DHT is scheduled for today. The Pemra has pleaded the court to set aside the LHC order restraining the authority to hold today’s bidding process.

The LHC had issued stay order a day earlier against DTH bidding that Pemra had planned to hold for awarding three DTH licences in Pakistan.

Cable Operators Association and their supporters, on the other hands, are opposing DTH auction by saying that DTH auction will kill their business and that this auction should be delayed by at least two years. The cable operators say that making DTH legal will affect their business and livelihoods negatively and that Pemra , the electronic media watchdog, didn’t take them into confidence before finalizing DTH auction.
