ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday has restored the tax on all mobile phone cards.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, heard the case pertaining to advance tax on cellphone cards.

“Top court would not interfere in the matters of public revenue and tax collection,” said CJP Khosa in short order.

The top court in June 2018 had suspended tax collection on mobile cards.

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar had ordered the suspension while heading a three-judge bench hearing a suo motu case regarding an increase in taxes on prepaid cards at the top court’s Lahore Registry.

Earlier in March, the Supreme Court of Pakistan sought a detailed report on extra taxes collected by the mobile phone companies during the previous year.

As per details, a two-member bench of the SC heard a case pertaining to the extra taxes collected by mobile companies.

During the hearing, the court expressed anger towards charging exorbitant taxes from poor people.

After a short hearing, Justice Qazi Faez Isa ordered to submit a detailed report of the matter from federal and provincial governments.

Justice Faez Isa also forwarded its application to the honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan for forming a three-member bench as the case was previously heard by a three-member bench.
