SC says Panama JIT to be constituted today

Islamabad (May 05, 2017): The special implementation bench of apex court headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan on Friday said that the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate allegations against the prime minister and his family stemming from the Panama Papers will be constituted today.

The implementation bench on Friday resumed hearing in the matter. At the very outset of the hearing, presiding judge Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan expressed annoyance, saying that a political leader said the five judges on Panamagate bench declared the Prime Minister as liar. “ We did not say such thing rather the leader lied to the nation,” Justice Khan remarked.

He remarked that the judges were showing restrain, adding “our patience must not be tested.”

During the hearing, Governor SBP and Chairman SECP appeared before the court and presented list of officers of both the institutions for the JIT.

Justice Ejaz Afzal said that the JIT would be constituted today and it would be announced through an order.

One of the members of the bench while addressing the Attorney General for Pakistan said: “tell all institutions not to be over smart”.

Justice Ejaz Afzal said that the JIT was to be constituted by the court and if anyone misstated facts he/she would be dealt as per law. He questioned as to who will be the beneficiary if the JIT was made controversial. He added that the names were leaked from the concerned institutions not from the court.

Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh said that negative reports was received about the political affiliations of the names proposed for the JIT.

During the hearing, Attorney General for Pakistan pleaded the court to ban media talks on the proceeding of the case.

It is to be mentioned here that the Supreme Court constituted the three-member special implementation bench to ensure implementation of its verdict in Panamagate case.

During last hearing, the bench rejected the names proposed by State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) for the JIT, directing the heads of both the institutions to appear before the bench in person during today’s hearing.

During last hearing, presiding judge Justice Afzal had remarked that court wanted transparent and impartial investigation of the case, adding, “We want honest and professional officials to be members of the JIT.”

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed said the bench had asked for lists of officials so it could pick them itself. “No one will be allowed to play games with the court,” he added.

Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan remarked that the court would not stand for any excuses or delays during the implementation of its orders.
