SC Shows Anger over Incomplete Transcript of Nehal Speech

Islamabad (July 24, 2017): Attorney General for Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf on Monday invited Supreme Court ire for submitting incomplete transcript of Senator Nihal Hashmi’s speech in the apex court in contempt of court case against the senator.

On last hearing, the court had indicted Nihal Hashmi in the contempt case and had asked AGP to try him as prosecutor in the case.

During today’s hearing it was revealed that the transcript of Hashmi’s speech submitted by the AGP in the SC was incomplete.

This angered the bench and Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh while addressing the AGP remarked;” You did tempering even transcript of submitting.”

The court said that the transcript of the speech provided by Pemra and submitted by AGP was incomplete. Upon this the AGP said that every channel telecast different parts of the speech.

Justice Azmat Saeed said that they knew well what was going on. Addressing AGP Justice Azamt said:”We will send your witness DG Perma to Adyala Jail.”

The court again ran the speech’s clip in the court room.

Justice Azmat said that as a prosecutor in the case the AGP did try to mislead the court.

Justice Ejazul Ahsan said that the contemptuous material was missing from the transcript of the speech submitted by AGP in the court.

Justice Azmat remarked: “AGP sahib whether you are yourself hostage or making the witness hostage.”

“If it turned out the TV channels had telecast more materials than the transcript submitted by you then DG Pemra would land in a prison instead of going home,” the judge warned.

When DG Pemra sought permission for clarification, Justice Azmat Saeed remarked: “would you like to give the clarification here or at Adyala Jail.”

Later the court adjourned hearing of the case till August 21, 2017.

On July 10, the SC indicted Nehal Hashmi over his provocative speech, in which he threaten apex court judges and members of the Panama Joint investigation Team (JIT), who were probing Sharif family business dealing and wealth abroad.

“You are not being sent to jail rather only being indicted in the case,” Justice Aijaz Afzal said in his remarks, while deciding to indict Hashmi.

Hashmi’s threatening speech at an event in Karachi on May 28 had drawn instant reaction from the Supreme Court, with Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar taking suo motu notice and summoning the PML-N leader to appear in person before the implementation bench supervising the work of the Panamgate JIT.
