SC To Take Up Naqeebullah Murder Case Today

Karachi (January 27, 2018): The Supreme Court will take up today a sou moto case regarding extra judicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud that has sparked outrage throughout the country.

The apex court will hear the Naqeebullah Mehsud murder case at its Karachi branch  registry today. On January 19, the chief justice had taken a suo motu notice of the incident and summoned a report from the Sindh police chief in seven days.

Hearing a separate case on January 23, the Supreme Court Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar observed that they have heard reports that Anwar is not appearing before the inquiry committee.

The Supreme Court summoned suspended Malir SSP Rao Anwar and senior officials of the Sindh government in the Naqeebullah killing case today.

Justices Ijazul Ahsan and Umar Ata Bandial will be part of the three-member bench that takes up the case.

Anwar’s name was also ordered to be placed on the ECL by the apex court. Earlier, the inquiry committee probing the case had recommended to the Interior Ministry the placement of Anwar’s name on ECL.Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took a suo motu notice of the extrajudicial killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud in Karachi. SSP Malir Rao Anwar, in a media talk on January 13, had claimed to have shot dead four alleged terrorists in a police encounter in Shah Latif Town area of Karachi.

Later, it was revealed that the deceased ‘terrorists’ included Naseemullah alias Naqeebullah, a 27-year-old from South Waziristan. His family claimed he disappeared on January 3 from Sohrab Goth and was then killed in a fake encounter.Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial ordered an inquiry into the “encounter” after public outrage on social media.

The Sindh government set up a three member committee headed by headed by Additional IG CTD Sanaullah Abbasi and comprising DIG East Sultan Khawaja and DIG South Azad Khan to probe  the matter.The inquiry committee investigating Naqeebullah Mehsud’s alleged encounter by former Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Rao Anwar on January 26 presented its report to the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan.

The probing unit, headed by Inspector General Police (IGP) Counter-terrorism Department (CTD) Sanaullah Abbasi, said in its 15-page document that Naqeebullah was nabbed along with two others from Sohrab Goth on January 13.Image result for Rao anwar flee attemptThe other two, who were also inquired by the committee, were set free after allegedly bribing the police officials, the report said.

The document also mentions that 26 shells from police sub machine guns were recovered from the ‘encounter’ site, while there was no evidence of firing from the alleged terrorists.

Banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)’s Qari Ahsan, who is imprisoned in Karachi Jail, was also inquired by the committee. Ahsan denied Rao Anwar’s allegations that Naqeebullah had links with TTP.

Earlier today, Sindh Police sent letters to IG Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) asking for assistance in the arrest of former SSP Rao Anwar after tracing his location in the areas.Image result for Rao anwar flee attemptOn Tuesday, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) foiled the former SSP’s attempt to leave the country from Benazir International Airport in the nation’s capital, while the officials also said that the Rao Anwar has not returned to Karachi yet.
