Senate Comm. objects on handing Tax exemption power to Minister

Islamabad (May 30, 2017): The senate standing committee for finance has raised objections over the handing over tax exemption powers to concern minister citing it was conflicting the constitution.

The committee meeting held under the chair of Senator Salim Mandiwala,  while secretary finance and chairman FBR briefed the meeting regarding finance bill for next fiscal year.

Giving remarks over the issue Mandiwala said proposal to hand over the powers of tax exemption to minister was against the constitution as cabinet approval is constitutional binding.

Senator Saifullah said that the tax exemption power should be kept with cabinet.

Secretary finance Tariq Bajwa told the committee that as per supreme court decision federal cabinet is called government and every member of cabinet, minister, also called government, however despite secretary explanation committee told the government to take review over the proposal.

Member customs Zahid Khokhar told the meeting that a proposal to authorized customs to conduct operation against drug and arms smuggling has been on cards in finance bill. Committee was also apprised that proposal to set up CPEC directorate to monitor trade activities under CPEC was also given.
