Senate Discusses Political, Law And Order Situation in Country

ٰIslamabad (July 21, 2018): The Senate, which resumed its session on Saturday morning, is holding discussion on prevailing law and order and political situation in the country.

Participating in the debate, Saadia Abbasi of PML (N) said the caretaker governments should stay impartial to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country.

Shibli Faraz of PTI said his party supports the demand of free and fair elections.

Mian Raza Rabbani of PPP regretted that candidates of proscribed outfits are also participating in the general elections.He said the election commission should answer as to how the nomination papers of such candidates were accepted. He said the general elections are very important for democratic future of the country.

Earlier, winding up discussion in the Senate, Caretaker Interior Minister Muhammad Azam Khan said all out measures have been taken for the protection of political leaders and election gatherings.

He said an election coordination and facilitation cell has been established in Islamabad, which is working round the clock.He said the cell is conducting effective coordination with all the stakeholders, particularly the provincial governments, the Election Commission Islamabad capital territory administration and National Counter Terrorism Authority for ensuring law and order in the country during electioneering.

He said we have deployed civil armed forces as per requirements of the provincial governments and the ECP.

The Minister said NACTA, Intelligence Bureau and other intelligence agencies are also supporting the ministry of interior in this regard.

Azam Khan said Pakistan army shall be deployed inside and outside of the polling stations for security purposes, while provincial governments shall make arrangements for installation of CCTV cameras at most sensitive polling stations.

The Minister said provincial governments have been requested to provide security to candidates, foreign observers and Chinese working on CPEC and non-CPEC projects.PML-N senators have demanded level playing field in the election campaign and peaceful environment for transparent and credible elections in the country.

Taking part in the discussion regarding prevailing law and order and political situation in the country, Javed Abbasi said the Election Commission of Pakistan should take steps for free, fair, and transparent elections.

Asif Kirmani said the caretaker setup has failed to provide security to ensure transparent elections. He expressed concerns on the fresh wave of terrorism in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa targeting election rallies and killing several people. Abdul Qayyum said PML-N does not believe in politics of conspiracies and everyone should come forward on the basis of performance.

He said concerns of the political parties should be addressed to ensure credible elections.

Ateeq Shaikh said free and fair elections are vital for continuity of democracy in the country.Ayesha Raza Farooq said it is an irony that a particular party is being facilitated, whereas PML-N candidates are being harassed and the ECP should take notice of this.

Pervaiz Rashid said credible elections reflect people’s will and everyone should accept this and there should be no interference in the way of free, fair, and transparent elections.

Sadia Abbasi Senate session should continue till general election on 25th of this month so that the House may have an oversight on the election process.
