Senior lawyer Sharifuddin Pirzada passes away  

Karachi (June 2, 2017): Senior lawyer and activist of Pakistan Movement Sharifuddin Pirzada passed away here on Friday. He was 94.   

He left behind two widows, two son and three daughters to mourn his death. Senior Lawyer Anwar Mansoor Khan said that Pirzada will be buried after arrival of his heirs from abroad.

Born on June 12, 1923, Burhanpur, British India, Pirzada participated in Pakistan Movement and served as secretary to Pakistan’s founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the 1940s.

He was a noted lawyer and constitutional expert. Pirzada had served as Foreign Minister during General Ayub Khan’s reign and served as Attorney General during Ziaul Haq regime.

He was the prime advisor to General Pervez Musharraf against maintaining the status quo regarding the 1973 constitutional oath given to the judges prior to the general’s coup d’état.

Pirzada remained highly-controversial figure amongst political and judicial circles in Pakistan due to his regular legal work in ensuring the legitimacy of Pakistani military rulers, as well as offering his services to a wide variety of entities seeking on ensuring the status quo in the country. For such reasons, he was regarded as a maverick lawyer with no firm stance on political matters.

Chief Justice Sindh High Court Ahmed Ali M. Shaikh suspended all judicial works in the high court to mourn the death of Pirzada. The hearing of important cases will be held at judges’ chamber.
