Avenfield Ref: Sharif Family Appears Before AC

Islamabad(April 30, 2018): Hearing of Avenfield Property Reference against Sharif family is underway in the Accountability Court I.

Former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain Retired Safdar are present in the court, whereas last witness of the NAB, Imran Dogar is recording his statement.

During last hearing of the case on April 24,  Maryam’s counsel Amjad Pervez conducted cross-examination of prosecution witness Zahir Shah.

DG NAB operations Zahir Shah recorded his statement before the court on April 23,. The NAB was granted permission from the accountability court to produce a new witness, DG NAB operations Zahir Shah, into the case in order to produce new evidences.

Shah said he acquired a copy of Volume X of the JIT report through letter of Supreme Court registrar.  He added that he did not share contents of volume with anyone but the investigation officer.

During the hearing, Pervez objected to the prosecutor’s reported interference in the cross-examination. The court proceedings were yesterday adjourned due to the absence of star witness in the case and FIA deputy Director Wajid Zia.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Capt (retd) Safdar who are co-accused in the case appeared before the court.

Background of The Cases:

The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017.

NAB to file three supplementary references against Nawaz

The corruption references, filed against the Sharifs, pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.Nawaz and sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.
