Karachi (November 09, 2017): The committee constituted on the directives of Sindh High Court to investigate the alleged fake police encounters is moving ahead with snail pace, dashing the hopes that the suspicious police encounters would probed and those responsible for extra judicial killings would be punished.
Earlier this year, the administrative judge of Anti-terrorism courts had taken notice of increased numbers of suspicious police encounters.
The judge had directed IGP Sindh to investigate over 90 encounters to ascertain whether the shootouts were real or staged by the police. The judge had also asked the top cop to keep updated the court about the investigation into the encounters. However, despite the passage of several moths the committee has failed to produce the investigation reports into the encounters. The committee has also failed to satisfy the court with its investigation. In many cases, the encounters were declared real despite many and glaring suspicions of being staged.
The progress and the speed with which the committee is moving forward can be gauged from the facts that it could only present report of only 10 encounters in the SHC out of the total 90 cases assigned to it to probe into. Lawyers say that if fake police encounters are to be investigated by police itself, then no results will come out.A lawyer Muzamil Mumtaz Advocate said that people feared to come forth to testify against police and especially when the investigation is being conducted by police itself.
The legal experts are of the opinion the court must resort to other options to investigate the fake encounters instead of ordering police itself to probe these.
