Sri Lankan Batsman Injured By Head-Knock off Cummins’ Bouncer

CANBERRA: Sri Lankan opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne stretchered from ground after the Australian pacer Pat Cummins’ bouncer hit his neck during 2nd Test match underway at Manuka Oval on Saturday.

The left-handed Karunaratne attempted to duck the short ball – angled from round the wicket – but was struck on the back of the helmet near his neck area and fell to the floor immediately, PerthNow.com reported.

However, the batsman was in “good spirits” in hospital now after being taken away from the second day of the Test against Australia in an ambulance, said a ABC.net report.

Sri Lanka’s physio urgently ran onto the ground as the Australians raced to check on the fallen batsman, who lay sprawled across the popping crease.

Karunaratne was tended to by medical staff and kept still on the floor for more than 10 minutes, before he was placed in a neck brace, rolled onto a stretcher and driven from the ground.

The 30-year-old was then taken to hospital for scans after complaining of pain in his neck and tingling to his hands.

Karunaratne retired hurt on 46 with his team cruising at 0-82 and was replaced by captain Dinesh Chandimal. Sri Lanka stood at 123 for 3 focusing to trail Australia’s 534 in first inning.
