Tea smuggling: Pakistan Tea Association demands slashing duty, taxes

Concerned about massive tea smuggling Pakistan Tea Association has demanded reduction in duty and taxes on tea imports.

Chairman of the Association Khalidpuri says that tea is the single biggest kitchen item in Pakistan but yet unfortunately the whole tea industry is being gravely effected by massive smuggling of the item. He proposed slashing duty and taxes on tea imports to help discourage smuggling.

He demanded the government to reduce the import duty from 10 to five percent; sales tax from 17 to six percent; reducing Income Tax from 6 percent to three percent and bringing Advance Sales Tax to zero. This would help discourage tea smuggling because high duty and taxes are discouraging legal import of tea in turn costing government billions in lost revenue.
