Islamabad (November 05, 2018): Timely diagnosis of cancer could help the experts to counter the disease, however, the rate of cancer related death is high due to lack of awareness and prevention against it at initial stage.
A majority of the population in this country remains ignorant about causes and symptoms of the disease and so neither takes preventive measures against it nor takes steps to curb it in the initial stage, stated Nuclear Institute of Medicines and Radiotherapy’s former director Professor Dr Naeem Leghari.Dr Leghari said that there are many symptoms of cancer such as if a physician fails to control non-healing wounds, unexplained fever, weight loss he must refer the patient to a cancer specialist.
He added that tobacco smoking and chewing, use of injurious “gutka”, “mainpuri”, “pan-parag”, betel nuts etc. are the main causes of different kinds of ENT cancers among males.
Strategies to improve early diagnosis can be readily built into health systems at a low cost.
In turn, effective early diagnosis can help detect cancer in patients at an earlier stage, enabling treatment that is generally more effective, less complex, and less expensive, he mentioned.Director explained, cancer is now responsible for almost 1 in 6 deaths globally. More than 14 million people develop cancer every year, and this figure is projected to rise to over 21 million by 2030.
