Karachi: Zakariya Express rams into Fareed Express; death toll rises to 19 killed, over 45 injured

KARACHI: The death toll in the two passenger-train crash near Gaddafi Town, Landhi has risen to 19. Over 45 injured have been injured in the deadly clash.

According to the details, Zakariya Express hit Fareed Express from back side in Landhi. Police and rescue officials reached at the scene and shifting the injured to the hospitals. Emergency declared in Karachi’s hospitals.

According to details the clash occurred near Qaddafi Town , Landhi.

Three bogies were completely destroyed. Twenty-four wounded people have been shifted to Jinnah Hospital, Karachi.

Two children and a child are among the dead.

According to information still coming in both the trains were on the same line due to erroneous signal.

Director Jinnah Hospital Seemi Jamali has said that most of the injured have head and neck injuries while some body parts have also being brought to the hospital. Forty-five wounded have been brought to the hospital, she added.

Expressing deep sorrow and grief Minister Railways Saad Rafique has ordered a probe into the horrific accident. According to Railways spokesman it appears as if the train driver crossed the signal by mistake or he was given the green signal, however the details and information of the clash are being collected, the spokesman added.

The Railways Minister has also announced Rs 1 million consolation money to the families of deceased and Rs 500,000 for thepeople  injured in the clash.

Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain, federal Interior Minister Nisar Ali Ali Khan and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif have expressed deep grief and sorrow at the deadly train clash. They also prayed for the early recovery of the wounded people.

Sindh Minister Industries Manzoor Wassan has said that his government stands along with the families of the deceased and the injured. He also said that the an enquiry should be conducted to unearth the reason of the deadly clash.
