WASHINGTON: US Central Command chief General Joseph Votel on Friday lauded Pakistan’s role for bringing peace and stability in the region.
“Pakistan has taken positive steps in facilitating talks with the Taliban,” he said while giving a briefing in the Senate.
He said cross-border attacks by violent extremist organisations (VEOs) fuelled instability and generated tension along the Pakistan-Afghan border.
Replying to a question about withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan, the Centcom chief said “We have not been directed to withdraw. There are no orders to withdraw anything.”
The comments came after Pakistan announced that it had seized 182 seminaries as part of a crackdown against banned outfits.
