US declares emergency at Hanford plutonium plant after tunnel collapse

WASHINGTON: The United States government declared an emergency at Hanford plutonium plant in Washington after a tunnel full of nuclear wastage caved-in and directed the workers to evacuate the area and do not use edible in the plant.

US Department of Energy said in a statement that there are cancers about subsidence in the soil covering railroad tunnels near former chemical processing facility. The tunnels contain contaminated materials.

Whereas Washington Department of Ecology spokesman said that no worker was injured in the collapse and officials have detected no release of radiation.

According to the details, a portion of a tunnel near the plutonium-uranium extraction plant (PUREX) collapsed early Tuesday morning. Initial reports spoke of a 4-foot (1.2 meter) hole, which was later expanded to 20 feet (6 meters) across, at the junction of two tunnels used in the 1960s to store highly radioactive materials and equipment.
